An AI chatbot with human handoff is more useful than a bot that never admits uncertainty. Customers forgive an assistant that brings a colleague. They do not forgive one that invents a refund policy.
Escalate early on sensitive topics
Give the assistant a low threshold for:
- Billing disputes, chargebacks, and cancellations
- Security, account takeover, and personal data requests
- Angry or repeated “this still does not work” threads
- Anything your legal team has not published as a public FAQ
Send context with the handoff
A useful escalation includes the visitor identity, the transcript, cited sources, and why the bot stepped aside. Your agent should never ask “how can I help?” as if the chat just started.
Keep auto-reply off after a human is in the thread
Once a teammate takes over, automated replies should pause. Mixed AI/human messages in the same turn confuse people and create duplicate promises.
Handoff is not failure
The goal of AI customer support is not 100% machine resolution. It is faster answers on documented questions, and a clean path to a person when the docs run out. Oxidesk is built around that split.
Configure handoff from your workspace at oxideskai.com.
